Injury from Running - Help |
|
Question:
Recently I experienced a strange injury while running and I wanted to
share this on the net to see if this has happened to anyone else and to
find out what it could possibly be.
I was running at a moderate/easy pace when a combination of events
caused a rather strange and disconserting injury to my back area. I
had been deliberatley concentrating on keeping my back straight and my
shoulders back while running at a moderate to easy pace (I have pretty
bad posture in general). As I was doing this I was also concentrating
on relaxing my breathing and at one point during an exhale, I felt a
sudden "shock" of pain go through my back when my heel stuck the
pavement with more force than ususal. It was like all the wrong events
coming together at the same time.
The pain was sudden and severe and made me stop immediatley to catch my
breath. I had to walk the rest of the way home. I sensed that I had
strained something in my spinal area about half way down my back just
above the lumbar region. It felt as if my guts jarred loose or
something. It did not feel like a skeletal type of injury in any sense
but rather some weird type of muscle spasm or strain located in my back
area but from a sort of internal perspective.
In other words, the
strain felt like it came from the inside area of my back facing the
abdomen as opposed to the the portion of the spine or back muscles
facing outwards. At first I thought I strained my diaphram. However,
I am having no difficulty or pain breathing so I'm ruling that out.
At first, the pain I felt from the initial strain seemed to get better
after the first hour or two. However as the day wore on my back and
insides got progressivley more sore and today I took the day off work
to rest. This morning was particularly bad after waking up. The pain
would get excruciating if I were to twist a certain way, but I could
get comfortable after a while if I just kept still. The pain is a kind
of gripping force that almost paralyzes me to the point where I have to
do my best to relax and slowly manuver my back to a straight position
in order to gain releif. I can get confortable if I stay relativley
still either sitting or lying down, however sports are obviosly out of
the question for me for a while.
After the first day, the pain has subsided some but it's unlikely that
I'll be ok in time for the weekend (it's bumming me since I had my
heart set on windsurfing). I feel as though the pain will go away on
it's own and I will not need to see a doctor. My experience with
sports injuries and knowing my body's healing process leads me to
beleive that I can recover from this one on my own. Unless I hear any
compelling arguments from the net to see a doctor, my instincts tell me
that I can wait this one out.
My questions are; has anyone experienced anything similar to this
injury and if so, what were the circumstances surrounding it? Finally,
can anyone offer a guess as to what I could have possibly done to
myself?
