Severe neck and shoulder pain
Question:
I have been suffering with this severe pain in the left side of my neck which extends into my shoulder. The muscles seem to be in spasm and are extremely painful. The pain is a burning type and it really wears me out and I can't do much of anything.

The doctor gave me skelaxin but it doesn't seem to help much. I have also been using moist heat. I think this was brought on by severe stress and I can't seem to break it. Has anyone found anyhing to help this condition ? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Answer:

Go back to the doc; ask for pain medication as well as a different muscle relaxer. My doc told me that none of the muscle relaxers really work all that well, but it's only trial and error that will work to find which ones work for you at all.

I too find skelaxin and flexaril don't work for me, so I use soma. You might get some benefit by adding a lot of ibuprofin to it as well.

Lastly, if you use ibuprofin or some other said, I've read a study recently that adding glucosamine seems to have a potentiating effect in reducing pain. This sounds like Myofascial Pain Syndrome. Please research it for more details. Also, do a search in this group and you'll get an idea of meds. But keep in mind that we're all different.

I use Xanax and than will calm the spasms. The burning sensation etc, even I have a tough time for that. You can try Neurontin and see what happens. I'm not even sure I "remember" what works for me. I know the Xanax does at times, and other times NOTHING works.
