| Neck Pain Relief |

Question:
I just started taking Prozac for the first time. Low dosage - 20 mg.
I am experiencing some light-headedness, but am not surprised because the
doctor warned me about that. What surprises me though is that I have
experienced neck pain for the past two years. I always thought it was
caused by poor posture at work, but when I started taking the Prozac, the
neck pain immediately went away.
I am not speaking metaphorically, this was a REAL pain in the neck.
Anyone ever heard of this?
Answer:
The neck pain was probably some kind of muscle tension thing caused by
depression or anxiety. The prozac increases serotonin, relieving muscle
tension. Its what a psychiatrist would call a "somatic symptom."
Some antidepressants have an analgesic effect at low dose. I don't
know if Prozac is one of them. I do know that Pamelor is one. It gives
me about the same amount of pain relief as four Aleve a day, with a
lot less wear and tear on the stomach. I think Kelly takes it for pain
also. It seems like chronic pain is helped the most by low dose AD. I
am not sure why, though.
It could also be what Eric descrbed, a lessening of tension, or
perhaps a combination of the two. Here's hoping that it will help your
depression as much as it helped your neck. (I am assuming you are
taking this for depression, I may be wrong.)
