| Lower Right Back Pain |

Question:
I have been doing triathalons for the last three years now.
Exactly two weeks ago today, I was puting on my running shoes to go for my
morning 15k run. I took about three steps and experienced pain in my lower
back on the right side. Could not run that day. Cause unknown. Decided to
take a couple of days off. Thought it was due to the increase in volume of
running. Which was a gradual increase from 25 miles a week to 45. Went to the
doctor 5 days into it.
He gave me some happy pills and told me to take it eas
for a couple of weeks. Could not give me a definate answer as to what it is.
It is still the same today as the day I experienced it. I do know that when
my right heel strikes I feel pain in my lower right back. When I try to stand
on the right foot alone I feel some pain in my right back. Any ideas as to the
cause of this? Solutions?
Answer:
Try a chiropractor. I got amazing results, I was also told that if you're
very active in sports you should see a chiropractor quite regularily, once
a month, I think that is too often for me but I'm definitely going to aim
for at least every 3 months. My lower back pain is caused by a joint in my
pelvis I think, when this joint gets stiff it makes my one leg shorter too.
The guy did a spinal re-alignment and no back pain and I walked out of there
after one session with both my legs the same length. I'd had been walking
around for the last 8 years or so, with about a 2cm difference!
I am no chiropractor or physical therapist, just a fellow triathlete,
but what you describe seems to involve your right sciatic nerve, since
the pain runs from heel to lower back. You do not report any traumatic
event involving your heel, for example, so my guess is that the injury
developed from some sort of overuse.
I had a similar thing happen but with shooting pains down the
back of my thighs. I went to a chiropractor who diagnosed it as a
lower back disk bulge. He repaired it and I have had no problems
since.
