| Lower Back Pain, Possibly Kidney Issues? |

Question:
I have woken up to pain in my lower back the past 2 days. Could this
possibly be a kidney problem?? It is not muscle or joint pain - it is
more internal. I have had crohns for 2 years, and am on prednisone,
immuran, asacol, & prevacid. Does anyone know what this could be?
Answer:
I too have had that pain, almost feels like someone gave you a kidney punch
on both sides. In my case, all the tests and x-rays they did showed it not
to be a kidney problem, but rather sacroliletis (spelling?), which is
arthritis in the lumbar area. I questioned the ER docs about it as I
thought it was a kidney problem as well, as the pain was not on the
"surface", it was internal.
The ER doc told me that next time it happens one thing that is
distinguishing is I had no pain urinating.
It does sound like sacroileitis (the magical joint pain that
can induce vomiting..). you should see a rheumatologist as it may be the
first sign of ankylosing spondylitis - or just another form of joint pain
if you're not in remission.
A freind of mine had had kidney stones 3 times. Each attack, before passing a stone,
started with a general ache high up in the back under the shoulder blade on the
side where the stone was. That was quickly followed by sharp pains, like a
knife being pushed into your back. This continued for up to 12 hours until the
stone reached the bladder. Could be that - check with your doctor!
