Lower Back Pain In Early Pregnancy
Question:
Does anyone have experience with lower back pain early on? I'm about 12 1/2 weeks, but for the last week or so, my lower back has been killing me. The pain is right around my tail bone, sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right. It hurts most in some positions (like when tying my shoes while sitting) but it will still ache pretty bad just walking. I don't even try to walk up the stairs. I thought it was just a temporary thing, but it doesn't seem to be going away.

Answer:

I have had similar pain from really early on this pregnancy (last time it didn't start until later on). I am now just 25 weeks and it seems to have lessened a little from earlier on, although the severity comes and goes.

I don't think it is anything to worry about, although it wouldn't hurt to mention it to your doc. Not much I can recommend either, except to try different positions- earlier on I found that lying on my back on a hard surface, like the rug, with a small stiff cushion right under my tailbone relieved it for a little while (now I can no longer lie on my back comfortably). Also have your DH or SO practice rubbing the area for you - a daily massage right above the tailbone feels great to me!

I also had sciatic nerve pain quite badly in the first trimester - from about 8 - 12 weeks, although intermittently. At 7 months though it really hasn't returned other than for a day or two here and there. Nothing like earlier though.

Anyway, when I mentioned it to my midwife she also suggested acupuncture so you might give that some consideration. Her husband is an acupuncture physician and treats her clients sciatic nerve pain quite often and quite successfully.
