| Hip and Lower Back Pain |
|
Question:
With all three of my pregnancies I've had pain in my hip joints and lower
back. I know the hip pain is caused by hormones softening my joints and
the lower back pain is caused by carrying this weight on the front. I'd
pretty much just accepted this as the way things were meant to be, and
looked forward to the day after I deliver when I'll feel better.
But I've found something that is making me feel much better! A couple of
weeks ago I was in a car accident (not too serious) and whiplash. Without
the gory details, let's just say I was pretty darn miserable. Stiff neck,
headaches, muscle aches and I CAN'T TAKE ANYTHING FOR IT!! (Except
Tylenol).
My doctor recommended I start going to a Chiropractor. I was skeptical
because I've heard horror stories and wasn't ready to get sucked into
this. But, on the other hand, I needed relief from the pain, so I tried
it out. The Chiropractor checked me out and it seems my vertebrae are all
screwed up. I also told him about the lower back pain/hip pain. He thinks
he can help.
So far I've gone for three adjustments (read: back crackings) and I feel
terrific in the lower back/hip department. I can walk without feeling
like I'm going to fall over, or wanting to scream in pain.
I'm not promising that this is the cure all for everyone, but if you are
one of the people that's been talking about the pain lately, you might
want to investigate. Find a good Chiropractor and make sure he
understands he needs to take it a little easy since you're pregnant. It
might help!
Answer:
Well, seeing the Chiropractor has certainly helped me. I have a lot of
experience with hip, low back, and chronic neck pain. I have been seeing
Chiro's on and off for years. When I was pregnant with my first child I
had severe leg problems after the fourth month. I endured for a month or
so and then started to look for a Chiro who had a **lot** of experience
working with pregnant women. I had a burning sort of numb pain that went
from buttock to knee, it was awful and I could only be on my feet for 10
minutes or so at a time.
After interviewing 4 or 5 chiropractors, I found a woman Dr experienced
with pregnant patients. She does a lot of massage before she adjusts,
usually spending as much as 1/2 hour with me or more, as opposed to the 10
minutes or so other chiro's have taken. She is very good at listening and
is responsive when I am nervous about a certain position, or if I'm
uncomfortable.
My sister expereinced some hip pain as well, and she found the best solution
to be swimming.
I am pregnant again, and in the fifth month the leg symptoms have
returned, they seem more intense now. Dr. suggests that my muscles are a
little more stretched out so that I am carrying more forward which places
more stress on my low back, which causes the leg pain.
