FMS and Back Injury Symptoms
Question:
Ever since I sustained my lower back injuries ( 1 herniated disc and 2 bulged discs ) and my herniated disc in my neck I have had every classic symptom of FMS except I do not have the " points " that are used to diagnose FMS! I read a booklet describing FMS and it was a revelation to me.

Finally, I thought, there is a name for the way I 've been feeling! I ache everywhere! My finger tips, wrists, knees, shoulders, etc; It is so frustrating however, to be told that I don't have a condition other than my above injuries! I know these symptoms are mostly un-related to my injuries but, are they? My feeling is that I have a type of " pre-FMS " triggered by my back injury mostly.

So, my frustration mounts when I complain of all this pain and doctors say " well, you should not have all that pain or those symptoms from your back." Ditto for workers compensation. Do others know of anything like this? Anyone have a similar plight? I'm a nurse and cannot work now because of this but, pressure is on me daily to go to work! I do wish I could but, just have way too much pain.

I can't walk or stand for more that 30 minutes and even then I pay dearly! Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?

Answer:

You do not have to have the tender points as described-the tender point's can be all gathered around your problem areas this is stated in Dr. Starnyl's book, Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain syndrome. My doctor's did not do the pressure point test-They looked over my medical record's over the past several year's and they knew what I had! I did not have to prove it by being tender in certain spots

I had a bad car accident in 1980. I was out of work about a year due to back pain, nothing ever show up on x-rays, though I couldn't hardly stand up, the pain was so severe it took my breath away! I've had problems ever since.

I've had fibro symptoms so long I can't be sure when they developed. I didn't know it was FMS as I was only recently diagnosed with it and I'm just learning about it, mostly with the help of reading the internet, so I can't be of much help there, others here have much more experience and knowledge about FMS. But it sounds to me you may have problems with your back that concern me.

Don't let anyone force you back to work to quickly, especially as a nurse you may find yourself in a position with a patient where you may have to support their weight unexpectedly. You could cause yourself more harm than good, please be sure you can perform your duties with out injuring yourself permanently.
