Anti depressants for low back pain
Question:
I have chronic low back pain. I take Tramadol but can only take 50 mg twice a day. More than that makes me ill. I've tried may other drugs but they have all bothered my stomach. My doctor prescribed Effexor. I tried it for a while but didn't notice any pain relief. It did seriously constipate me which increased my back pain. Eventually I stopped taking it. Withdrawl wasn't pleasant. Can someone recommend something that they have had successful pain relief with? Something that hopefully is not constipating?

Answer:

Some of the new beta blockers like Bextra and Vioxx can help a lot with arthritic or joint pain in the back and other areas. Narcotic-APAP blends if used in lower doses can do wonders and still not make constipation a major issue. Talk to your doctor about your expectations from medications and your problems so far with them. It may take awhile but they usually work by trial and error starting with the medicines with the highest percentage of success with similar problems.
