Left Upper Back Pain
Question:
I am running 6 miles every other day during the week, with a 12-14 mile run on the weekends. I am 43 years old & have been working up this level since age 35. I weigh about 170Lbs at about 6 feet tall.

On my longer runs I get a cramp in my upper back, between my shoulder blades, just to the left of my spine. When I turn my head to look at something to the left the pain sharpens. Anyone got an idea what this is & how I can stretch or exercise to get rid of it?

Answer:

I used to get what sounds like a similiar pain. I read an article that pointed to tensing up my arms by holding them too high, when I run. I started forcing my shoulders down and my hands open, at about my waist, during more of my run. It seems to have worked the pain disappeared and never returned.

A friend of mine gets the same pain. his is from a whiplash injury a couple of years ago. When it hits, he says it lasts for a couple of weeks. He seems to have had really good luck with a chiropractor and only ges when the injury comes back (about twice a year). The visits are three times a week until it's gone. Usually takes two weeks to be completely rid of it.
