| Chronic Neck And Shoulder Pain |
|
Question:
I have suffered from chronic migraines since 1997, after a motor
vehicle accident. I waited quite a length of time before seeking
chiropractic treatment, as there was a latency period between the
accident and manifestation of symptoms. By then, I was told I had
"permanent whiplash." I suffered migraines at variable rates. Each
migraine is in the exact same spot (my right temple) and lasts an
average of 2 days. I go through periods in which I get 3 headaches a
week, and periods in which I get one headache every two weeks.
I have
consulted with a neurologist, who recommended an MRI (not funded by
insurance) and various medications. The only medication that works to
get rid of the migraine is Maxalt; nothing else, including
over-the-counter medications, will work. I have not had insurance
benefits for the last year and thus have been suffering an onslaught
of migraines.
More concerning is the severe neck pain I am experiencing. This is a
daily, constant, and unending pain localized to a point on the back
side of my neck where the trapezius meets the right side. Upon
palpation of the right lower side of my neck and the extremely taut
trapezius muscle, I am able to palpate large masses that are tender.
The largest mass is on the trapezius right above the clavicle, the
smallest mass is on the right side of my neck.
At times the pain is
so intense I am unable to concentrate or move. My neck is *always*
extremely taut, and I can feel the neck vertebrae clicking and
grinding. My right shoulder also clicks and pops.
The migraines and severe neck/shoulder pain are making my life quite
miserable. Unfortunately, I still do not have insurance benefits, and
when they do kick in, they do not cover chiropractic care.
Does
anyone have any idea what could be wrong with my neck/trapezius? The
pain began to intensify a couple of months after I took a long ride on
a motorcycle, during which time my neck was strained significantly
against the wind. Also, does anyone have any ideas on how to palliate
the constant pain? At this point I am quite desperate for any amount
of pain relief I can experience, as not a day goes by that I am
without pain.
Answer:
I guess you could call me an expert on this subject since my chronic pain involves my neck,
shoulder,
back and arm besides the migraines... Do you at least have a GP that
could prescribe a low cost pain med for your neck? Some pain meds might
help to at least dull your migraine pain as well. Also, sometimes when the
DR knows you have no insurance, he might have some free Maxalt samples if
you ask.
