| A question concerning cause of back pain |
|
Question:
I have chronic back pain that is aggravated by my fibro. I'm
currently going into another "downswing" in which the fibro is taking over &
manifesting itself with a vengeance. My back trouble has gotten
progressively worse over the weekend, and I've had problems just standing
up. My husband suggested that I use the cane I still have from a long-ago
back/hip injury -- I tried it, and it seems to help; not only as an
assistance in standing, but to lean on when I slowly move around the house.
My question is: Is it "silly" to use a cane for lower back pain? I thought
canes primarily were used for leg/hip/ankle problems. I'm not worried about
how I "look"; I'm more concerned with whether I will aggravate the pain by
using a cane, even if it seems to help. Opinions?
Answer:
It's not silly if it helps, however, you need to be evaluated especially
since you have a prior back/hip injury to determine what is going on,
get a treatment plan that may include PT. I'd check with a physical therapist. You don't want to over compensate for
something and then possibly cause problems elsewhere.
I was also having terrible lower back pain that I thought was just my fibro.
I was telling my doctor yesterday about it... how I had to roll out of bed
sometimes onto the floor in order to just get up. Well, she ordered x-rays
and called me today to say I have arthritis in my lower spine. That combined
with the fibro in that area drive me nearly insane sometimes. I would talk
to your doctor.
