Back Pain Relief Pregnancy
Question:
I bought a maternity back-supporter to relieve my back pain. It does seem to help a bit, but I had to take a pair of scissors to the elastic at the legs, and it's starting to feel very tight at the waist--and today's the first day I've worn it. (It's by Take Nine, bought at Sears). Has anyone had success (and comfort) with anything like this?

Answer:

I have had 3 pregnancies, and back trouble with each of them -- actually my sacrum. (I'm not going to look up the spelling, the bone at the bottom of your back that attaches to the hips).

I had sharp pains down there during the last half of my first pregnancy, and started to have pains by 4 months with my second (I only made it to 5 months, so I didn't get to see how bad it would get). I was in horrible shape by 6 months with my third, limping around, my lower back and hips hurt so much. I then went to a friend who has been studying Feldencris (sp?), Somatic Education, and another healing/realignment school which I've forgotten.

She did this gentle massage work to realign my back and hips, and I, for the first time, didn't have sharp back/hip pains with my pregnancy. [Well, until the last 2 weeks, but then again, with a 9' 10" son in there....].

Supposedly, we all hold our bodies somewhat unevenly, but it often takes something that adds extra stress, like an accident or pregnancy, to cause problems. You might want to try a couple of sessions with someone in your area who practices one of the things I mentioned to see if it'll help. Or get recommendations for a GENTLE chiropracter - you can't afford to have anything made worse.

Back excercises can help. The pelvic tilt excercises are fairly simple, but can do wonders for a sore back. Many pregnancy books have instructions for this.
