Injury to back of knee from running
Question:
I have injured the back of my knee while trainig for a 1/2 marathon. I feel that this is an overuse injury as I trained quite hard and increased my mileage and speed too rapidly. Here are the symptoms:

1. At approximately 6 miles into my run I felt a sharp and excruciating pain in my knee. However, the sharp pain deceased, and dull pain was present for the rest of the run. This happened on October7th.
2. The pain seems to be on the medial (inner) side of the back of my knee, right where it bends.
3. It is tender to the touch.
4. It hurts when I "push off".
5. It also hurts when I step down on my foot. It does not hurt when I step down and land on my heal though.
6. I have been doing stairclimbing at my local gym, and this does not bother me. It seems to help.
7. I started running again a couple of weeks ago, but VERY LIGHTLY, and much shorter in duration. Probablly 8-10 miles a week. However, this seems to have reinjured my knee and it is now as bad as when I first injured it.

I would appreciate any advice or opinions for me to aid in my recovery from this injury.

Answer:

suggest going to see a sports doctor, as you might have torn (or worn down) some cartilage. That's what happened to me, and your symptoms sounds like mine. I went to physical therapy to recover, basically I do a lot of stretching and weight training (concentrating on the quads because running builds up the hams). 3 months out of PT and still no pain!

Of course if it is a TORN meniscus, seeing a doctor and getting and MRI and following the doctor's suggestions are the way to go.
