Question:
I want to prepare a back
injury prevention training program. Obviously, I don't want to re-invent the wheel,
can anyone recommend one?
Answer:
The Oregon Department of Occupational Safety and Health
Division has videos and other A/V items available for those of us in our
state. You might try to contact your branch of OSHA for assistance or
check with one of your major building contractors for assistance.
Contact Ferno-Washington in Wilmington, Ohio, USA - you should be able
to get an 800 number. They developed serveral injury-prevention
programs a few years ago, complete with slides, video, student
handbooks, etc....
Because of my research on chronic pain, I recently visited the
workers compensation board here in Vancouver. I was struck by the
huge emphasis they placed on very, very simple techniques such as
correct posture when walking up stairs, sitting, standing, etc. and
when i say "huge" I mean it literally: everywhere in this very pleasant
building there where more-than-life size posters advertising these
techniques.
If you are looking for an eye-opener from a totally different perspec-
tive, you may want to read therese bertherat's "The Body has its Reason"
. She
builds her approach on a French dancer's idea that when we look at
back problems, we usually take the wrong approach because we only look
at strengthening the back muscles, without stressing that they also
need to be supple and relaxed.
