Question:
A friend of mine is already seeking help and therapy, I am just trying
to get more information on the specific back injury, a pinched sciatic nerve and
bulged disk - I am trying to help him in any way possible, and the more
information the better.
Answer:
All kinds of good info on the web. Just google and you'll find sites
like these with basic info:
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/encyclopedia.html
I spent almost two months sleeping on the floor because of exactly what
you described , the pain is unbearable and travels from your lower back to
your buttocks right down to your foot.
Doctor told me to exercise but the only problem with that was I couldn't
move in order to do any exercises lol, Just take it easy , you are better
off lying on something solid such as the floor and in time it will fade.
Massage, no matter how aggressive will
not correct a bulging disk. This in combination with tens will/may
provide some relief but will not correct it. I tried everything -
massage, acupuncture, physio, chiropractic, rest. I would recommend
staying away from chiropractics - I suspect, along with my doctor, that
it was this that caused the a bulging disc I had to herniate. The best
thing that I found was the MacKenzie Principle introduced to me by Joan
at Nova Physio. It was the only thing that gave me slight relief.
Anyway, after 4 months of being off work, hardly able to move, living
and sleeping on the living room floor, surgery was the only thing that
worked. I feel for your friend.
I think that massage, tens, and the MacKenzie principle can be very
beneficial. It will/can get you to a point where you can start treating
the conditions that caused the problem in the first place - probably
weak/imbalanced core, tight hip flexors, tight/unbalanced quads/hams,
posture, etc. There can be many causes. You may want to do a search for
a guy Paul Check on the internet. We did some work with him a while
back. He is considered on of the best posture/core strength specialists
in the world. There may be articles on is site that could help - once
this acute symptoms are under control.
I'd recommend getting in touch with his own doctor for a
referral to see Dr. Sharon Hynes, Sobey's square if this is work related and
has a health plan.
This type of injury will get progressively worse, some of the symptoms are
numbing in the ass cheeks and pain shooting out thru the bottom of the feet
making it impossible to stand or walk. Some days, the pain will alternate
from one leg to the other. Rest and a tends machine with agressive massage
will fix him up in 2-3 weeks.
